A study was done (forgot the source) in children's school where a hypothetical scenari of of a drowning pet dog and human stranger was givien. Sadly, two-thirds of responses were "they will rescue the drowing dog". I asked the same at work expecting that grown-up responses will be different. Unfortunately, they were similar. Responses were "my dog is my family" or "my dog brings me joy".
Why does a human life more valuable than a dog or fly? If you are secular or non-Judeo Christian origin, you cannot answer this question. That's why Hinduism or Buddhism sounds so nice considers an animal life to be just as "sacred" as a human life.
The bible teaches that the human life is more valuable than all other animals. It's not because God created us since animals were created by God too. It is because we are made in the image of God and God is infinitely valuable.
That's why Christians should not be including their pets as "family" or bend truths because "you feel joy". Of course, pets should be well cared for, but the institution of "family" is sacred since God created for our benefits. The institution of the "family" is reserved for those "made in the image of God" and we should not change the definition like we have done for "life", "marriage", "male", "female", "love", "pastor", "goodness", "wrath" etc. Once you start changing the definition of family to include your pets or "feeling joyful, so it is more important attitude", the sacredness of the family no longer has meanings.
