Juan Carlos Ortiz's book covers what it means to be a disciple and he starts the book with a personal story very similar to mine. As he was serving he realized it was not to God's glory but more like selling coke like a corporate company would. It was good to hear this after having just returned from serving the Mosaic youth retreat where we learned about soli deo gloria through the 5 solas. it was interesting to see how we made the gospel something so different from how it was in Jesus's time. This part of his book hit very deeply "salvation is a commandment" and not an invitation. I realized we think of it more of an invitation many times.

In addition to salvation as a commandment vs invitation, another part that stuck out to me even more because of my role at church as an educator is the chapter on the formation of disciples. I realized I haven't truly thought about what it means to make disciples for my students in the way of Jesus. Ortiz describes this as an analogy of cleanliness and soap that we shouldn't just talk and sing about how soap is clean and how great it is but actually use it and clean it. I need to take Jesus's commandments to heart and lead my students by example with actions and concrete instructions on how to become disciples of Christ.

This book gave concrete ways to think (although sometimes harsh), about discipleship and how we can become and make disciples.
