Mark 12:30-31

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.

The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.

This is my favorite bible verse, so much so that I even tattooed “mark 12:30-31” on my left forearm. My reason for liking this verse is because of its simplicity. The most important command is to love God and love your neighbor as yourself. The command is simple and leaves very little room for misinterpretation.

The first part, loving God, is talked about very often at church. I would be surprised if we go through a service without mentioning this. What about the second part though, loving your neighbor. I can name many Christian music that holds the lyric regarding love God (or some variation of it), but how many can you think of that talks about loving your neighbor as yourself?

Even loving my neighbors is half of the commandment, I had no idea how to actually achieve this. Who are my “neighbors?” Do I need to love every person I randomly come across? The book mentions that I need to love “my neighbors” not the whole world. My neighbors are the ones that I can give myself to. Letting them know that I love them and serve them.

I have always had a hard time loving my neighbors, let alone loving God. I pray that I start small and love my neighbors that are around me. Lead them and disciple them such that we all grow in Christ.
